DeSoto County officials hope meetings planned next week in Washington with
the county's congressional delegation and Environmental Protection Agency
staff will help clear the air and avert inclusion on the agency's ozone
"nonattainment" list.

JACKSON — Gov. Phil Bryant on Thursday announced the promotion of the
deputy state aid engineer to the top spot, where he will direct the office
that helps counties with the construction of roads and bridges.


Carey Webb began his new job Wednesday.

Off the service road near the Dub Patton Recreation Area at Arkabutla Lake
in west DeSoto, there's an unlikely forest. It's a pile of discarded
Christmas trees -- fancy firs, spruce trees, down-home cedars -- about 250
of them.

TUPELO – The fires that clear dead grass and underbrush to make way for new
growth and new life, along with the organized groups that manage them,
helped bring statewide recognition to one Tupelo man recently.

John Gruchy, private lands habitat coordinator with the Mississippi
Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, was named Wildlife
Conservationist of the Year by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation last
week.

JACKSON – Legislation to name the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge for the
late Sam D. Hamilton, a Starkville native and former director of the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service, has been passed by Congress.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An environmental watchdog group filed a lawsuit Thursday
against the company it blames for an oil spill 11 miles off the coast of
Louisiana, claiming oil has been flowing into the Gulf of Mexico for more
than seven years with few details about what's being done to stop it.
