STATE LAWMAKERS TO BORROW $291M FOR PROJECTS

Despite a massive economic downturn associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mississippi Legislature passed its traditional annual bond bill that will add $291 million to the state’s indebtedness.
House Bill 1730, sponsored by state Rep. Trey Lamar, R-Senatobia, is loaded up with capital projects for state agencies, community colleges and universities and some pet projects of legislators and was passed right before the session ended Wednesday night.

USGS News: Larger than average hypoxic area expected for Gulf of Mexico

NOAA scientists are forecasting this summer’s Gulf of Mexico hypoxic area or “dead zone” – an area of low to no oxygen that can kill fish and other marine life – to be approximately 6,700 square miles, larger than the long-term average measured size of 5,387 square miles but substantially less than the record of 8,776 square miles set in 2017. The annual prediction is based on U.S. Geological Survey river-flow and nutrient data.

BP to pay for four new Okaloosa County reefs

Plans call for constructing artificial reef structures 15 to 20 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico in four locations, two off Destin and two off Okaloosa Island.

EPA Takes Action to Stop Use of Certain PFAS in Products and Protect American Consumers

WASHINGTON (June 22, 2020) — Today, as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Action Plan, EPA is issuing a final rule giving the agency the authority to review an expansive list of products containing PFAS before they could be manufactured, sold, or imported in the United States.
