Dump fire prompts Franklin County to reroute garbage

Circuit Clerk Warren Walker, who oversees the county’s solid waste collection program, told the Board of Supervisors on Monday Riverbend Environmental Landfill in Jefferson County – where Franklin County dumps its garbage – had been given a 30-day extension to operate by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

This morning the driver of a tanker was sent to the hospital with injuries and a section of Highway 603 in Hancock County was shut down as crews worked to contain a dangerous threat.

Harrison County Fire Rescue responded to a truck fire earlier this afternoon on Highway 49.
The truck was southbound when it began filling up with smoke and then flames.

Pearl River Clean Sweep set for Sept. 19

This year’s Pearl River Clean Sweep event is scheduled for Sept 19. Cleanup teams will be deployed at over 25 locations along the Pearl River watershed, from its headwaters in Nanih Waiya, downriver through the Ross Barnett Reservoir, along the border of Mississippi and Louisiana, all the way to Pearlington on the Gulf Coast.

750 million genetically engineered mosquitoes approved for release in Florida Keys

A plan to release over 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes into the Florida Keys in 2021 and 2022 received final approval from local authorities, against the objection of many local residents and a coalition of environmental advocacy groups.
