The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is hosting the agency's first ever America Recycles Day event on November 15 in Jackson. MDEQ invites area businesses, agencies, institutions, organizations,
and the general public to celebrate the America Recycles Day event in Smith Park in downtown Jackson from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. MDEQ, along with many local partners, will be sponsoring this event to promote the benefits of recycling and provide information on how to set up recycling programs. The event will offer numerous booths and exhibits explaining the environmental and economic benefits of recycling in fun and educational ways.
In addition, the event will also promote several deserving organizations and efforts in the metropolitan area that also include recycling and reuse in their mission. These organizations include:
- Dress for Success – people are encouraged to bring gently used ladies’ dress shoes that help underprivileged women with professionalattire for interviews and jobs.
- Stewpot – bring canned goods to help low income people and families.In conjunction with the collection of these canned goods,MDEQ will be promoting safe donation practices for usable food from area grocery stores and restaurants to reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills.
- Cell Phones for Soldiers -- a non-profit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active duty military and veterans. The program collects discarded cell phones that are sold to purchase calling cards and other communication tools for the U.S. military. Bring discarded cell phones to the Mississippi Department of Transportation exhibit.
