BP oil spill cleanup ends, but MDEQ still monitoring beaches

GULF OF MEXICO ? The Gulf Coast Incident Management Team and the U.S. Coast
Guard are transitioning the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response back to
the pre-spill National Response Center system, according to a release from
the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).

mid-June, company officials say the National Response Center will be the
point of contact for reporting all oil, chemical, radiological, biological

The U.S. Coast Guard said today that BP has completed cleanup work in

Alabama, Florida and Mississippi following the company's massive 2010 oil

spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The U.S. Coast Guard and BP announced Monday that the company will end

active Deepwater Horizon oil spill cleanup operations in Mississippi,

Alabama and Florida by mid-June. A Coast Guard news release also said

future response efforts in those states, if needed, will no longer be led

by its Gulf Coast Incident Management Team, which will continue to oversee

cleanup efforts in Louisiana.
